Blackjack

also known as Twenty-one or Vingt-et-un (French: "twenty-one"), is the most widely played casino banking game in the world. Blackjack is a comparing card game between a player and dealer and played with one or more French decks of 52 cards. The player is dealt an initial two card hand with the option of drawing cards to bring the total value to 21 or less without exceeding it, so that the dealer will lose by having a lesser hand than the player or by exceeding 21. Many rule variations of blackjack exist. Since the 1960s, blackjack has been a high profile target of advantage players, particularly card counters, who track the profile of cards yet to be dealt, and adapt their wager and playing strategy accordingly.

HOW TO PLAY:

Each player plays his hand independently against the dealer. At the beginning of each round, the player places a bet in the "betting box" and receives an initial hand of two (2) cards. The object of the game is to get a higher card total than the dealer, but without going over 21 which is called "busting", "breaking", or many other terms. The player goes first and plays his hand by taking additional cards if he desires. If he busts, he loses. Then the dealer plays his hand. If the dealer busts, he loses to all remaining players. If neither busts, the higher hand total wins. In case of a tie, no one wins - the hand is a "push" and all bets are returned. It is possible for the dealer to lose to some players but still beat other players in the same round.

CARD VALUE :

Cards 2 to 9 are at face value. Tens, Jacks, Queens and Kings are all worth ten. Ace is valued as 11 unless it would cause a hand to exceed 21, in which case, it is valued as one (1).

STANDARD OPTIONS:

  • HIT : Take another card.
  • STAND : Take no more cards.
  • DOUBLE : On the first two cards, the player may "double" his bet and receive only one card.
  • SPLIT : If the first two cards are a "pair," meaning two cards of the same value, the player can "split the pair." The dealer splits the cards to create two hands, placing one bet with each hand. The player then plays two separate hands.
  • SURRENDER : After the dealer has checked for blackjack, the player may "surrender" by giving up half his bet and not playing out the hand.

ODDS:

House pays 1 + 1.5 for a blackjack hand on the first two cards. While even money is paid or 1:1 when the player beats the house.
